A Quick About Me
My name is Sarah Keim, and I have done a little bit of everything over the years. I have worked as a piano teacher, an academic instructor, a museum assistant, and data curator. I have interned in art and natural history museums along with volunteered for historical societies and children's museums. I have lived in and traveled to a variety of places including Vermont and Italy. As any one who knows me can tell you, I am willing to help whenever and wherever I can. I work hard to do a good job
Currently, I am a Wolfram|Alpha Data Curator. In a nutshell, I fact check dates, names, locations, and other quantifiable figures for entities in our vast data repository. I manually edit the code that allows for those entities to be searched via our website and used in the company's more well-known product Mathematica. If you or someone you know took a college calculus course in the past twenty years, you or the person you know may have used Mathematica. Also, I help to scrape data and do other tasks like test our foreign language responses to help make W|A a better product for our users. Sometimes it's hard to explain what I do to people. I've found I can explain it in two different ways. In one way, I'm like a registrar or collections assistant who handles digital objects rather than physical ones. I keep track of a number of records on a daily basis. In another way, I get to research topics as far ranging as "when was the ground breaking for Wrigley Field?" to "who owns Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles?" I use my knowledge of various topics from the arts to sports and researching skills to find legitimate proof in order to present and share the best information possible.
As of January 2016, I write articles for Smile Politely's Arts section. These articles range from previews to reviews of art exhibitions, books, musicals, and plays. Writing for SP has been enjoyable for me. Since graduating with my second Master's degree, I've been looking for a way to get back into writing and engaging with a community. SP has let me explore a side of Champaign-Urbana that I hadn't seen. Hopefully I can continue to improve my writing skills by writing about the local art scene here in C-U.
Previously, this website featured more of my academic work. I'm hoping to add pieces including my collegiate essay on Donatello's Judith and Holofernes from my first Master's degree back onto the site. I'm also thinking of starting a blog in order to explore topics not related to the local community.
In the near future, I'm hoping to start the next chapter in my career. I look forward to the adventure whether it is finding a place in museums once again, finding something new in the arts, or going back to academia for a Ph.D in Italian Renaissance Art History.
